“Napa of the North” – July Wine Week
We had an amazing week exploring vineyards and wineries in the “Napa of the North”! Not only are there incredible ocean views, but there are also award winning delicious wines coming out this region. This region is a bridge between California and Bordeaux in terms of style and location. The wines coming out of here are complex and interesting and the Wine Spectator and Wine Enthusiast are noticing! Each month we will feature a selection of wineries from the North and South Fork of Long Island and take you on our journey highlighting our favorite experiences and wines!
First Stop – McCall Wines in Cutchogue, NY
- What We Loved: The tasting room is in a charming horse barn and run by a lovely husband and wife team and the vineyards are fronted by the Peconic Bay. The French influence is evident throughout from a French influenced style of winemaking from a French winemaker to the French style beef cuts cut beef cuts you can pick up to cook at home. We love the pinot noirs which is a hard grape to grow on Long Island and they do it beautifully. Their wines are served at the award winning restaurant The North Fork Table and Inn.
- Favorite Wine: Ben’s Blend which is a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Sauvignon. It received 91 points from wine spectator for the 2012 vintage.
Second Stop – Macari Vineyards & Winery in Cutchogue, NY
- What We Loved: We chose to make a stop here because we had a refreshing rose from this vineyard when we had dinner at the Eleven Madison Park pop-up restaurant in East Hampton. We were glad we decided to make the stop! The beautiful drive up to the winery, the elegant copper top wine tasting bar and the luxurious outdoor seating with a vineyard view perfectly complements the rich and delicious wines!
- Favorite Wine: Bergen Road, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc which received 92 points from wine advocate in 2010.
Third Stop – Kontokosta Winery in Greenport, NY
- What we loved: The water view is absolutely amazing! The rustically elegant, yet modern barn winery has big red barn doors and sits on top of a small hill and looks down on a bluff with a cliffside water view where you can enjoy your wine. This is a small production winery where you can taste exclusives in the tasting room.
- Favorite Wine: We had 2 here… the 2015 Suavingon Blanc which received 90 points from the Wine Enthusiast was flavorful but also refreshing and the 2013 Cab Franc was juicy with fruit flavor and delicious and it received double gold, best in class at the New York Food and Wine Classic
Fourth Stop – Wolffer Estate in Sagaponack, NY
- What We Loved: This winery is a local favorite of ours and is centrally located in the Heart of the Hamptons. The grounds and tasting room are absolutely beautiful but also with a fun atmosphere and consistent and tasty wines. This all starts with the winemaker Roman Roth and we were lucky enough to attended walk in the vines event with Roman this week. We always recommend a stop by Wolffer – especially in the summer for a glass of Summer in the Bottle rose which they are widely known for!
- Favorite Wine: Christian’s Cuvee Merlot 2013 which received 94 points from the wine advocate – this wine is like velvet and will age beautifully.
